Bridges
Fixed solutions to replace missing teeth, using adjacent teeth as anchors to bridge the gap and restore your smile and chewing ability.
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth. It "bridges" the gap created by missing teeth, literally connecting to adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. A bridge is composed of at least two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (called abutment teeth) and one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) in between. The abutment teeth are prepared just like a crown preparation, and the entire bridge unit is then custom-fabricated and permanently cemented onto these prepared teeth.
Bridges are crucial for several reasons beyond just aesthetics. When a tooth is lost, the adjacent teeth can shift into the empty space, leading to bite problems, jaw joint issues, and increased difficulty in cleaning, which can predispose these teeth to decay or gum disease. Missing teeth can also affect speech and chewing ability, impacting nutrition and confidence. A dental bridge helps maintain the integrity of your dental arch, distributes biting forces properly, and prevents the remaining teeth from drifting out of position.
Similar to crowns, bridges can be made from various materials, including porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or gold, depending on the patient's needs and the location in the mouth. The procedure for a bridge also typically involves two appointments: one for preparing the abutment teeth and taking impressions, and a second for the final placement and cementation of the custom bridge. With proper care, including diligent oral hygiene (especially cleaning under the pontics with specialized floss) and regular dental check-ups, both crowns and bridges can last for many years, significantly improving oral function, comfort, and the beauty of your smile. They are vital tools in restoring complete oral harmony and confidence.
